the lodge experience

Copal Tree Lodge sits in Punta Gorda, Toledo, Belize, perched above the Rio Grande and within a short boat ride of the Caribbean Sea. Guests stay in Canopy Suites or Jungle Suites surrounded by 16,000 acres of protected rainforest, with access to two private infinity pools, farm-to-table dining at the Garden Restaurant, evening cocktails at the Rum Bar, and treatments at the on-site Jungle Spa. It is a full-service luxury resort that happens to sit on some of the best permit and tarpon water in the world. Loaner rods, reels, and an on-site fly shop mean you can travel light and fish hard.

Typical Itineraries

Days start early with breakfast at the lodge before heading to the water with your guide. Flats fishing trips run half-day or full-day out of Joe Taylor Creek, targeting permit, tarpon, snook, and bonefish within protected marine reserves. River fishing departs along the Rio Grande, where tarpon, snook, snapper, and jacks hold in prime jungle habitat. Lunch and beverages are included on full-day tours. Evenings are spent back at the lodge with cocktails from Copalli Rum, dinner crafted from the lodge's organic farm, and the kind of sunset you only get when you're sitting above the rainforest canopy.

Permit, Tarpon, Bonefish & Snook

Copal Tree's southern Belize location puts anglers in the middle of one of the most complete saltwater fisheries in the Caribbean. Permit are the marquee target on the coastal flats, with Belize consistently producing some of the largest permit in the world. Resident tarpon hold year-round in the Rio Grande and surrounding mangroves, with fish commonly running 10 to 80 pounds. Bonefish are accessible on the outer cayes, and snook are a consistent presence throughout river and mangrove habitat. Grand Slam attempts are a legitimate goal here.

More than a lodge

Sitting between 16,000 acres of rainforest and the Caribbean Sea, Copal Tree Lodge is built like nothing else we carry. Sixteen private suites, two infinity pools, a full spa, yoga pavilion, rum bar, and a farm-to-table restaurant sourcing from their own 3,000-acre organic farm on property. A funicular takes you down to the river where the permit and tarpon fishing begins. Read the full breakdown inside.

"My husband did guided fishing for two days, I did one, and it was so great. Only saw one other boat far off. Not crowded, peaceful, and our guide Kenny was very entertaining and a pleasure to spend the day with. Must do if you fly fish." - Melissa T.
