If you have spent time on the flats and you are ready to step up, the Western Atlantic is your playground. The Bahamas and Puerto Rico offer world-class bonefish, permit, and tarpon in clear shallow water with experienced guides who know how to put technical anglers in position. Alongside the Western Atlantic we recommend Central America. This is undoubtedly the Permit Capital of the world and an all around amazing place that should be on every technical fly fisherman's radar.
BlackBone Outfitters Recommendation:
Puerto Rico in particular is extremely underrated offering year-round access, short flights from the mainland, and a fishery that rewards precision and patience in equal measure. The crew
For anglers who want to push further, the Central Pacific is in a category of its own. Fanning Island in Kiribati is one of the last truly unpressured flats fisheries on earth. Trophy bonefish, giant trevally, and bumphead parrotfish on pristine atolls with virtually no other boats in sight. This is an expedition, not a vacation. If that excites you, it is the right trip.
Best for: Intermediate to advanced fly anglers. Year-round for Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. Seasonal windows for the Central Pacific.
EXPLORE THE WESTERN ATLANTIC | EXPLORE THE CENTRAL PACIFIC | EXPLORE CENTRAL AMERICA
If the idea of a fish that can strip 200 yards of line in under ten seconds is what gets you out of bed in the morning then you are looking at the Pacific side of Central and South America.
Central America is one of the premier striped marlin and pacific sailfish fisheries in the world. This region offers unique opportunities such as the famous sardine migration that triggers a marlin bite even experienced offshore anglers call the best of their lives. Multiple hookups in a single day are common and plentiful. The crews found around central America are the best in the world, making it the perfect destination for first timers or seasoned anglers.
Looking to South America rounds out the offshore picture with Striped, Blue, and Black Marlin numbers that consistently rank among the highest release rates recorded anywhere. If you want sheer volume of fish and fast-paced action from a world-class sportfishing vessel, this is your answer.
Best for: All experience levels. Offshore fishing is accessible even for first-timers with the right crew. Peak season October through January for Mag Bay. Year-round for South America.
Golden dorado in Argentina. This is the trip that converts fly fishermen into obsessives. The golden dorado is one of the most aggressive freshwater predators on the planet, an explosive, aerial, technically demanding fish that inhabits the jungle river systems of northern Argentina. Don Joaquin Lodge puts anglers on fish in water that feels genuinely wild and remote, fly fishing only, in a setting unlike anything else in the BlackBone portfolio.
Best for: Intermediate to advanced fly anglers. Seasonal windows vary by river system. Contact us and we will match your calendar to the right conditions.
Some anglers measure the quality of a trip by the fishing. Others measure it by how far they had to go to get there. If you are in the second camp, Fanning Island is the answer. A remote atoll in the Central Pacific, accessible only by a serious commitment of time and logistics, with a fishery that remains largely unexplored. The fishing is exceptional. The setting is extraordinary. And the fact that almost no one has been there is the whole point.
For remote without the extreme logistics, northern Argentina and the jungle lodges of South America offer a similar sense of genuine wilderness with slightly more straightforward access.
Best for: Experienced anglers who prioritize solitude and exploration. Travelers who have done the mainstream destinations and want something that genuinely challenges them.
If this is your first guided fishing trip or your first international fishing experience, we have a specific recommendation: do not overcomplicate it. Start with a destination that fishes well consistently, has a reliable operation, and does not require a week of travel to reach.
Puerto Rico and the Bahamas are both exceptional starting points. Short flights, English-speaking guides, world-class fish, and operations that have hosted thousands of anglers before you. You will come home with a story worth telling and a much clearer picture of what you want your next trip to look like.
Mexico is also a strong option for first-timers who want offshore fishing. The crew at Mag Bay handles anglers of all experience levels and the marlin bite during peak season is productive enough that even newer anglers get their shots.
Best for: First-time guided anglers. Budget-conscious travelers who still want a world-class experience. Groups with mixed experience levels.
The Bucket List. Three Destinations That Change Everything.
Some destinations are worth the long flights, the layovers, and the logistics. These three are on every serious angler's list for a reason.
