Guatemala's Pacific coast off Iztapa is one of the most productive billfisheries on the planet, a place anglers have come to know simply as the sailfish capital of the world. The fishery sits along the edge of the continental shelf, where a deep drop just fourteen miles from shore and a swirl of eddy currents trap bait and predators in what local captains call the pocket, a stretch of blue water that fires year round. It's a place where average days bring shots at twenty or more sailfish, and when the bite really turns on those numbers can climb toward the triple digits. Blue, Striped, and the occasional Black Marlin round out the fishery alongside quality yellowfin tuna and dorado.

The Fishery

Guatemala's Pacific coast off Iztapa is the sailfish capital of the world, and the numbers back it up. Fourteen miles from shore the continental shelf falls away to a thousand feet, and eddy currents trap bait and predators in what the fleet knows simply as the pocket. That geography is why the bite fires year round here, with no narrow season to chase. Average days bring twenty or more shots at sailfish, and when it really turns on those numbers can climb toward eighty or even a hundred. Add three species of Pacific marlin, plus quality yellowfin and dorado for the table, and you have a fishery that rewards both big numbers and a real shot at a billfish grand slam.

The Crew

This is a hands-on lodge, not a boat ride, and the difference shows the moment you're on the water. Captain Chris Starrs and his team fish hungry, always chasing the next bite, and they bring the same energy to teaching. Over your trip they'll walk you through the art of dropping back baits on hungry sailfish, and by day three most anglers are up to speed and hooking their own fish. It's a tournament-preparation style of fishing that leaves you a sharper angler than when you arrived, whether you're new to billfish or have been chasing them for years. That investment in the people on the boat, not just the catch count, is what has guests coming back season after season.

The Lodge

Comfortable, welcoming, and built entirely around the fishing. Air-conditioned rooms and comfortable beds mean you actually rest between long days offshore, and the kitchen turns out real food, fresh and well made, with dietary needs handled without a fuss. The scene on and off the boat is relaxed and easy, the kind of place where anglers swap stories over a cold drink and a plate of fish tacos at the end of the day.
