Fishing Great Inagua

Target Species

Bonefish, tarpon, permit, and snook, with barracuda, jacks, mutton snapper, and triggerfish rounding out the mix.

Untouched, Low-Pressure Flats

Great Inagua sits at the far southern edge of the Bahamas, closer to Cuba than to Nassau, and its remoteness is the whole point. The island supports a community of only around 800 people, and its flats see almost no traffic, so bonefish hold in real numbers across shallows that most anglers never reach. This is fishing as raw as it gets, the kind of quiet, uncrowded water that has grown rare across the more traveled Bahamian destinations. You will often go a full day without seeing another skiff, working fish that have rarely, if ever, been cast to.

A Genuine Shot at the Grand Slam

Bonefish are the daily bread here, but Inagua's waters carry resident tarpon, permit, and snook, giving the fishery a true grand slam character within a single tide. Barracuda, jacks, mutton snapper, and triggerfish fill out the days when you want to chase something different, and the variety means the fishing rarely settles into routine. Whether you are working the shallows for tailing bonefish or hunting bigger, harder-pulling fish along the edges, there is always something worth casting to, and the shots come often enough to keep every day interesting.

Reach Water Others Can't

Access is part of the advantage on Inagua, and the lodge is set up to exploit it. Guides run South Dade skiffs to cover ground and reach distant flats, paddleboards to slip into skinny water without a sound, and an off-road truck that opens up the island's remote interior and its wilder, harder-to-reach edges. That range means you are not fishing the same handful of spots day after day. However you like to fish, the setup is built to take full advantage of everything the island holds, from its beaches and mangroves to the backcountry flats few anglers ever touch.

Accommodation & lodge life

The lodge

Lodge Size

An intimate two-cottage setup hosting no more than six anglers at a time, set right on a quiet south-shore beach.

Getting There

Bahamasair flies from Nassau twice weekly, on Monday and Friday mornings, so trips run on a Monday to Friday schedule with an overnight in Nassau on either end.

Trip Options

Fully guided weeks or DIY packages, both structured around the island's twice-weekly flight rhythm.

The birdwatching capital of the Bahamas

Great Inagua is the birdwatching capital of the Bahamas, and it earns the title. Inagua National Park covers nearly half the island and holds the largest breeding colony of West Indian flamingos in the world, tens of thousands of them turning Lake Windsor pink. Beyond the flamingos, more than 140 resident, migratory, and endemic species move through here, including the island's own Cuban Parrot and the Bahama Woodstar hummingbird found nowhere else. A local guide, arranged through the Bahamas National Trust, is how you see it properly.
