PAYARA

THE PAYARA EXPERIENCE

Cast into a fast-moving jungle river and be ready. Payara are notorious for attacking with blistering speed. One moment the lure is sweeping through the current, the next a flash of silver explodes from the water as a payara strikes. Known for their dramatic jumps and violent head shakes, these fish put on an aerial display that rivals many saltwater species. Battling one in powerful jungle currents makes every hookup an unforgettable fight.

THE VAMPIRE FISH

Payara, often called the “vampire fish,” are one of the most unique freshwater predators in South America. Their long, fang-like teeth extend from the lower jaw and fit into sockets in the upper jaw, giving them a prehistoric appearance. Found in powerful river systems throughout the Amazon and Orinoco basins, payara thrive in deep pools and fast-moving current where they ambush baitfish. For anglers exploring jungle rivers, few species are as striking or as exciting to catch.

Heavy Jigging
Large jigs worked through deep pools and strong current where Payara hold.
Casting Metal Lures
Fast retrieves with spoons or blade baits trigger reaction strikes.
Live Bait Fishing
Presenting baitfish in deep river channels can attract larger Payara.
Fly Fishing
Heavy baitfish patterns fished with sinking lines in strong current.
