The Bonefish Capital of the World | Swains Cay Lodge

There is a reason serious flats anglers have been prioritizing trips to Andros for decades. The island itself is the largest in the Bahamas and one of the least developed. The flats have stayed largely intact and healthy as have the fish populations. The Middle and South Bights, massive tidal estuaries that cut through the interior of South Andros, create a network of creeks, channels, and flats that goes on longer than you can fish in a lifetime.

The bonefish here are bigger on average than almost anywhere in the Caribbean, the populations are dense, and the water is far less pressured than anywhere with comparable fish. Andros earned the name Bonefish Capital of the World the honest way, and has held that title for a good reason.

Swain's Cay Lodge sits right in the middle of it, on a white sand beach on Mangrove Cay, with access to both the Middle and South Bights and everything in between.

The Fishing

Bonefishing at Swain's Cay is excellent year round. But the full season here goes well beyond bones. Tarpon and permit push through consistently and when they are in, grand slam water is within reach. Just outside the Andros Barrier Reef the Tongue of the Ocean drops off to over 6,000 feet. Wahoo, mahi, tuna, and billfish become legitimate offshore targets on any given afternoon.

What makes the location rare is the wind protection. The lodge sits between two major bights, and that positioning is structural shelter regardless of which direction the wind is coming from. When a front rolls through and other destinations are scrambling for fishable water, your guide at Swain's Cay already knows where to go. Blown days are genuinely uncommon here. That matters more than most people realize until they have lost a day due to inclement weather.

The Guides

Cheryl built her program around independent local guides who have fished these specific bights and flats their whole lives. Not guides with general saltwater experience. Guides who know where the fish will be on specific tides, winds, and flats, on any particular morning. 

That kind of knowledge is what separates a good day from a great one. It is also what brings people back to Swain's Cay year after year, same lodge, same guides, same beach. When clients are returning specifically for the guide, that is the tell.

The Woman Who Built It

Cheryl Bastian grew up in Nassau and spent 33 years in financial services. In 2001 she went to visit family on Mangrove Cay and fell in love with the island. Over the next eight years she secured the financing, found the property, and built Swain's Cay Lodge from scratch. She officially opened in February 2009 and has been on-site ever since.

She is the one on the property every day, making sure the right guide is matched to your skill level and the experience reflects in everything found at the lodge. That kind of ownership shows in everything, and it is the reason Swain's Cay feels different from the moment you arrive.

Cheryl built the lodge with the community around it in mind. Local dive guides, deep sea captains, birding operators, and island tour guides are all part of the program. Real work and real income for people on an outer island that needed both. Its that exact selflessness that has allowed Cheryl to build such an incredible place on such a special island. 

Getting There

Generally anglers fly into Nassau, spend a night, and catch a 20-minute connector to South Andros Airport with Lea Air or Flamingo Air. A quick ferry ride to Mangrove Cay where you are picked up by the shuttle and to the lodge in minutes. Anglers coming from Florida can take a simple flight out of the Fort Lauderdale executive straight into South Andros and follow the same. Airlines such as Aztec or Makers air fly daily to Andros at various times.

Anglers do not have to worry about long boat rides or sketchy airstrips. It is a short hop and you are on the beach with a bonefish flat in front of you where the guides are already planning for tomorrow.

The remoteness is real but the access is easy. That combination is rarer than it sounds in serious destination fishing.
